Grd 7 learners practiced their maths skills and worked out the volume of rain water that could be caught off 4 of their schools buildings' roofs in one rainfall event of 30mm. They first got about measuring the area of the classrooms so that they could do the lxbxh calculation. With tape measures and clipboards out they set about the task with keeness and also counted the number of jojos their school is so fortunate enough to have - they have an amazing TEN 5000litre tanks, which enable them to store 50 000litres of water.

After lots of converting they were astounded to calculate that they could capture around 37 500litres off 4 buildings in one 30mm rainfall event! Imagine how much they could catch if they calculated for all 11 buildings. They also realised that while they had 10 jojos, which is alot more than most schools, they could easily increase their capacity as a number of the roofs are without gutters or tanks...

Lesson learned - you can never have too many jojo tanks! (and lots more! )
