Due to our very concerning situation of widespread drought in our province our water explorers have started saving and reusing water which would have just 'gone down the drain'. The explorers have been collecting rain and grey water in plastic two litre bottles; the children have established their own WATER BANK.
When they bank their first two litres they are given a Bank Card and a small sticker records every two litres they bring thereafter. When the children have saved 20 two litre bottles, they are awarded their own blue beaded Water Bracelet. We already have many proud water conservationists who have saved 40 litres or more for our school.
The 'banked' water is for flushing our toilets and water our vegetable garden as well as the Sunny Spot Nursery which is run by the children.
This initiative has already had a huge impact on families who have been made aware of how many litres they use without thinking to bath and shower and are now finding their own ways of reusing the water. Small actions from little people showing the way!
We thought this would be a great challenge for all other countries, whether water scarce or not to try. As regardless of this fact, it still takes an enormous amount of effort, energy and money to clean and transport water… so if we are all using it more mindfully and ‘re-using’ it where possible we will be saving more than just money! As at the end of the day this challenge will stop wasteful water use and for those areas that are really water scarce, it will help with very real issues of having enough water to do all the basic things we depend on.
